Barzagli ruled out of EURO
Italy defender Andrea Barzagli has been ruled out of the rest of UEFA EURO 2008 after injuring his left knee in training. The 27-year-old Wolfsburg player will undergo an operation in Vienna in the next few days.
Barzagli, a former Palermo captain who has 23 caps to his name, played in the opening 3-0 defeat by the Netherlands, but did not turn out against Romania or France. He is the second Italian defender to be forced out after Fabio Cannavaro injured himself prior to the tournament.
Italy play Spain in their quarter-final in Vienna on Sunday.
