Spain have never lost an international match when Carlos Marchena has played in central defence for them.

The 28-year-old Valencia player has played 42 times at the heart of the backline for his country, with them winning 32 of those games and drawing the other ten. The only time he played in midfield, they lost; 1-0 to Greece in 2003.

Marchena, who made his international debut in August 2002, and central defensive partner Carles Puyol should team up against Sweden in Saturday's UEFA EURO 2008 Group D match. Both sides started with wins, Spain beating Russia 4-1 and Sweden defeating holders Greece 2-0.
