Wilhelmsson ruled out of EURO

Sweden's joy at beating holders Greece 2-0 was tempered today when it was revealed that midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson has been ruled out of UEFA EURO 2008. The 28-year-old, scorer of 14 goals in his 50 internationals, suffered a right-thigh injury 12 minutes from the final whistle as the Swedes ran out deserved winners of their Group D opener.

"He (Wilhelmsson) has torn a muscle in his right thigh and there is no way in our opinion that he will be fit again before the end of the tournament," said Swedish team doctor Anders Valentin.

Aside from Wilhelmsson, who cannot be replaced, right-back Niclas Alexandersson is a doubt for Sweden's next match against Spain in Salzburg on 14 June. They round off their first-phase action against Russia four days later.
