Knee injury knocks Frei out of EURO
Switzerland striker Alexander Frei will miss the rest of UEFA EURO 2008 after he suffered a partial rupture of knee ligaments in his country's opening loss Saturday to the Czech Republic in Basel.
Borussia Dortmund star Frei, the Swiss skipper, tangled with Czech defender Zdenek Grygera three minutes before the break and was forced to leave the action in tears. Tests showed a partial rupture of internal left knee ligaments and he will play no further part in the tournament, the Swiss news agency ATS reported.
The crowd gave Frei a standing ovation when he went off to be replaced by veteran Hakan Yakin, with Ludovic Magnin taking the captain's armband.
