Gili to coach Ivorians in Ghana
Former Bordeaux and Marseille boss Gerard Gili is to replace Ulrich Stielike as head coach of Côte d'Ivoire for this year's CAF Africa Cup of Nations, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) announced on Monday.
The eleventh hour decision came after Stielike suffered a family crisis when his son lapsed into a coma.
According to the federation Stielike is therefore not "in the right frame of mind" to lead the Ivorian squad.
Gili, who has been with Cote d'Ivoire since 2004 and will oversee their Olympic campaign at the Beijing Olympics this year, was assistant coach during the Cup of Nations campaign in Egypt in 2006 where they lost to the host nation in the final.
The Elephants are currently training in Kuwait as preparation for the 2008 edition, which begins on January 20 in Ghana.
Cote d'Ivoire have been drawn in Group B along with Nigeria, Mali and Benin.
