Iraq-New Zealand: Quotes

Ricki Herbert, New Zealand coach
I think tonight is another milestone. We've never come to a tournament and got a point - and we've certainly never dictated a game in a senior FIFA competition before. In doing so, I think we've proved a few doubters wrong. It was important we came back with strength and credibility after the last game against South Africa, but even though we'll enjoy the moment, we won't get carried away. We'll move forward with unity, strength and caution as we move towards our play-off for next year's World Cup. We'd love to be back here next year.

Bora Milutinovic, Iraq coach
I'm really proud of my boys. With very little time together they've managed to put in some excellent team performances and achieve some good results. They gave it their all. Although we didn't win the match, I think that during the games against South Africa, Spain and again tonight, we've proved that Iraq have some very good players and they have the potential to become a very competitive team. I hope that in the future my players will be able to play football in freedom and enjoy life.

Shane Smeltz, New Zealand forward, Budweiser Man of the Match
Obviously I'm very honoured to be named as the Budweiser Man of the Match. It's always a nice accolade to receive. It would have been great to win the match, but this game has given us our first-ever point in this competition and I'm delighted that we've achieved that.

Glen Moss, New Zealand goalkeeper
It was great to be part of our first point in the competition. After seeing the games, I think Spain will go on and win it, they have the best players and the best team. The crowd were superb for us tonight and helped us a lot. It was absolutely superb to play in this competition and it's given us even more of a drive to come back here next year. It will be an amazing World Cup.

Younis Mahmoud, Iraq striker
We played very well today. New Zealand were very composed and I think it was the best match of our tournament. Both teams had chances and missed them - it was an entertaining draw. It was very important for us that we got recognition at this FIFA Confederations Cup and it was a great experience. It was a fantastic tournament for us with some great teams and although we're disappointed that we didn't reach the semi-finals, we're still very proud.

Nashat Akram, Iraq midfielder
It was another game which worked out like the previous one; if you don't score you don't win matches - and seeing as we didn't score in any of our three games we didn't make it through to the semi-finals. I hope the people in my country understand that we really wanted to make it to the last four, but we didn't - and that's how football works sometimes. In the future, we want to bring them happiness.
