Katlego Mphela's stunning free-kick for Bafana Bafana against Spain in the match for third place has been voted by FIFA.com users as the goal of the tournament at the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009.
Having seen their 1-0 lead turn into a 2-1 deficit within the space of a minute in Rustenburg, South Africa were indebted to a sumptuous set piece from the substitute to take the match into extra time. Handed a lifeline deep into injury time after a foul by Liverpool winger Albert Riera, Mphela stepped up to fire home a guided-missile of a free-kick from fully 35 yards which even a keeper of the calibre of Real Madrid's Iker Casillas could do absolutely nothing about.
The goal was not enough to give the hosts a place on the podium, however, as Xabi Alonso's precise finish gave Vicente del Bosque's side bronze.
FIFA.com users were asked to select their favourite goal from a shortlist of ten - and Mphela's goal received the highest number of votes, highest number of voters and the best average, ensuring that he pipped Giuseppe Rossi and Kaka to joint second place.
