Following the initially positive result of a doping test on the Mexican player, Claudio Suarez, during the FIFA/Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia (Brazil vs. Mexico on 16 December 1997 in Riyadh, traces of nandrolone - an androgene anabolic steroid - were found in the specimens), the Bureau of the Organising Committee of this FIFA competition decided not to impose sanctions on the player because of an administrative error in the procedure. Moreover, FIFA took further tests into account which the captain of the Mexican national team had undergone of his own accord. These tests have all proved to be negative.
