World champions France will kick off the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup against co-hosts Korea on 30 May 2001 in Daegu (Korea). Both teams were drawn on 4 April into Group A of this eight-team tournament, which will end with the final match in the Japanese port city of Yokohama on 10 June. Mexico and Australia, also due to meet on 30 May for their first match in Suwon, complete Group A whose venues (the third one being Ulsan) are all located in Korea.

Group B with the venues Ibaraki and Niigati in Japan features Brazil, Cameroon, Japan and Canada. Brazil will take on Cameroon on 31 May in Ibaraki while co-hosts Japan will have to battle it out with Canada on the same day in Niigata.
