Under the chairmanship of Marcel Mathier (SUI), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee meeting in Paris today – 23 June 2003 – decided to suspend the French player, Willy Sagnol, from the national team for two matches, in compliance with art. 40 and 48 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
With one match suspension having been served in respect of France v New Zealand in Paris on 22 June, he will be suspended for one more match.
Furthermore, a fine of CHF 5,000 was imposed on Willy Sagnol.
In deciding the extent of the sanction, the committee took account of the fact that he had a clean disciplinary record with FIFA and that his attitude had been positive during proceedings.
Sagnol was sent off in the 90th minute of the match between France and Japan in the FIFA Confederations Cup in St Etienne on 20 June after tackling the Japanese player, Hidetoshi Nakata, from behind although they were not tussling for the ball.
