It's simple! Once there was the Intercontinental Cup (which was played for a lot of years in Japan): it was a match between the winner of the most important cup of UEFA and CONMEBOL. Then it was decided to increase the size and adding also the winner of the other confederations which are, or were, very weak. That was the reason. Perhaps in the future this privilege will be removed.

Just as a question but why does CONMEBOL and UEFA get an automatic bid to the semi-final round of the Club World Cup?

"Fortunately, my experienced players took control of the match, though we won’t stand a chance if we play like that against Seongnam. The next game starts now," Josef Hickersberger, Al-Wahda Sports Club coach.
