Josef Hickersberger, Al-Wahda Sports Club coach
Losing by such a margin proves that they were better than us. But the way we started the match hurt us very badly. When you’re already 1-0 down after four minutes it becomes an uphill struggle, especially when that goal comes from a defensive error. We had the best defence in our league but they had an off day this evening, which is a shame that it had to happen in such an important match. Even so, we were able to level the scores but we were not capable of matching the tempo they set. There’s no doubt that most of my players hadn’t fully recovered from our previous match but they’ll have to do so in time for our next game, because we owe it to our fans to finish in fifth place.
Tae Yong Shin, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma F.C. coach
It was a spectacular match and I’m very happy that we won. I want to congratulate Al Wahda because they never sat back and just defended, while I’d like to thank my players for putting my instructions into practice perfectly. Our opponents had some good individuals but collectively we’re a notch above. We can now turn our attentions to our next game. Whatever the result against Inter Milan, the fact we find ourselves rubbing shoulders with them at a competition like this is both a great honour and an exceptional opportunity.
