Al Ahli put on a spirited display to overcome Al Shabab 3-1 on Sunday and win their fifth domestic title since the league began more than thirty years ago. In doing so, Al Ahli also qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009 as the host nation representative.
Al Ahli looked very much in control early on and national team player Esmail Al Hammadi was the first to cause a stir when he crossed from the right and Jader Volnei Spindler managed to attempt a header.
The early attack reached a high point when Hosni Abdo Rabo scored in the seventh minute after receiving a ball from Faisal Khalil. Hosni Abdo Rabo then set up another before Al Ahli scored an own goal in the 36th minute while defending a Marcos Assuncao free-kick.
Al Ahli put their supporters at ease when Salah Abbas's free-kick from nearly 30 metres could not be stopped, earning Al Ahli the win and the brand-new UAE Football League (UFL) trophy.
The title is the first for the Al Ahli since 2006, with previous titles having been earned by the club in 1975, 1976 and 1980.
