Eight teams remain in the hunt. FIFA.com wants to know whether you think Caracas, Cruzeiro, Defensor Sporting, Estudiantes, Gremio, Nacional, Palmeiras or Sao Paulo will earn the distinction of winning the 50th edition of the Copa Libertadores and a place at the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009.
Four Brazilian teams are still standing, and two will collide for a place in the semi-final. Attacking midfielder Wagner and skilful forward Kleber will be central to Cruzeiro's hopes of winning this tie, while Sao Paulo will look to multifunctional midfielder Hernanes and the prolific Washington.
Their compatriots Palmeiras, for whom goalkeeper Marcos and striker Keirrison have been on song, will take on Uruguay's Nacional, whose progress thus far has been indebted to defender Mauricio Victorino and, especially, rising star Nicolas Lodeiro.
Gremio cruised into the knockout phase with the best record from the group stage, before overwhelming San Martin 5-1 on aggregate. Midfield composer Tcheco, former Barcelona forward Maxi Lopez and his rejuvenated striker partner Souza will now look to put paid to the participation of Caracas, who also marched into the quarter-finals emphatically and boast the influence of Luis Vera and the ingenuity of Dario Figueroa.
Juan Sebastian Veron and Mauro Boselli helped Estudiantes ease into the last eight, and they must now face a Defensor Sporting spearheaded by a Diego de Souza-Diego Vera attack and fresh from an arresting, unforeseen elimination of Boca Juniors.
