Chelsea and Manchester United will collide in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in a repeat of the 2008 decider, while Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan will be favourites to eliminate Tottenham Hotspur, Shakhtar Donetsk and Schalke respectively.
The Red Devils edged the Blues on 6-5 on penalties to become European kings three years ago, and the pair have become fierce rivals in the Premier League in recent years. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men will have home advantage in the second leg of that tie, whose winners will face the Inter-Schalke victors for a place in the final.
Spurs, who unexpectedly beat AC Milan in the Round of 16, will also be on home soil in the return leg. However, they will once again be the underdogs against the competition’s most successful side.
Shakhtar Donetsk, who qualified for the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League for the first time this season before beating Roma home and away in the first knockout round, were handed arguably the toughest assignment possible, though they will be buoyed by a 3-2 win at Barça in the group stage of the 208/09 edition.
The first legs will be played on 5 and 6 April, with the returns transpiring the following week. The final will unfold at Wembley on 28 May.
