Uruguayan outfit Penarol saw off Godoy Cruz 3-1 to register their first victory in Copa Libertadores Group 8.

An early goal by Juan Manuel Olivera was the catalyst for Diego Aguirre's team to secure victory in Argentina just days after losing heavily to another Argentinian side, Independiente, in the first round of group fixtures.

Olivera opened the scoring after just 55 seconds but the visitors were pegged back when Ruben Ramires equalised after 30 minutes, heading home a Fabricio Nunez cross. Olivera restored Penarol's lead shortly before the break while Luis Aguiar completed the scoring midway through the second period.

Olivera admitted the win was key after the opening loss to Independiente, saying: "After the last week defeat in Buenos Aires, there was no option but winning tonight because this is a competitive group. We played very well in the first 45 minutes, very intelligently and the first goal was crucial as it was quite quick."

In Group 5, Chilean side Colo Colo defeated Deportivo Tachira 4-2 in Venezuela. Ezequiel Miralles put the visitors two goals up with a first-half brace before turning provider for Esteban Paredes to make it 3-0 after 71 minutes. Lucas Wilchez made it four before Julio Gutierrez scored twice deficit in the last five minutes of the game to restore some respectability to the scoreline for Deportivo.
