Ajax coach Martin Jol has identified his side's UEFA Champions League double-header against Auxerre as vital after their 1-1 draw at home to AC Milan last night.
The result leaves the Amsterdam club with one point from the first two games in Group G, three points behind Milan in second place. Next up for Ajax are home and away matches against French side Auxerre on 19 October and 3 November respectively, and Jol knows they will make or break his club's aspirations to progress.
Jol told De Telegraaf: "It is now harder to finish in the top two. But in the coming battles with Auxerre we can make good progress. These matches are crucial, then we will know what is possible."
Ajax fullback Vurnon Anita was forced off with a calf injury but it is thought to be bruised rather than anything more serious. Mounir El Hamdaoui gave Ajax a 24th-minute lead but Zlatan Ibrahimovic - a former Ajax striker - levelled for Milan 13 minutes later.
