Jorge Fossati, Al-Sadd coach
We are very happy, more than happy, with today’s result. Beforehand, we knew it would be very tough and that expectation was correct. It was very difficult, very tough, and I am delighted that we were able to defeat a good team who played very well. We were fortunate to enjoy a good outcome. Today’s win has very significant meaning, not only for ourselves, but for all clubs in Qatar and all of Asia. It’s a special day for us, not so much in terms of the quality of our football, but more in terms of the significance as a country and a continent.
Nabil Maaloul, Esperance coach
My team had several excellent opportunities but were not able to capitalise. I also have to say that we did not enjoy much luck today. I actually expected more from Al-Sadd. My team did a great job but the fact we were not able to make the most of our opportunities decided the match. We produced a very attacking performance and would have scored two or three more goals if only we had enjoyed more luck. Each of these two clubs plays to a very high standard and I still believe I have very good players with great skills. In my view, Asian football and African football has reached a very high level.
