Between them, Enyimba and Zamalek have won the CAF Champions League seven times in the past.
After the latest weekend of group action in this year's competition, the clubs from Egypt and Nigeria now also boast a shared tally of three points as they opened their accounts in their respective groups. Following a controversial defeat away in Sudan in their opening Group B match, Enyimba returned to their fortress at the Aba International stadium and overwhelmed Coton Sports of Cameroon.
The 2-0 victory included yet another goal for Stephen Worgu, whose record in this year's competition now stands at 11 goals in eight games. The nippy striker showed a clean set of heels to the Cameroon defenders as he burst through the centre of the pitch, bearing down on the goalkeeper and then expertly picking his spot for Enyimba's second goal of the game.
Worgu had also played a key role in the opener. His initial shot was blocked, only for it to be played back to his attacking partner Ezenwa Otorogu, who held off a defender to protect the ball and then turned with such power and pace that the ball rocketed off his boot into the net.
The victory for Enyimba served to erase the disappointment of their opening group defeat at Al Hilal, where they were beaten 3-2. Al Hilal picked up a further point on Saturday with a goalless draw away at TP Mazembe Englebert in Congo DR. It was disappointing afternoon for the fans who packed into the Kenya Stadium in Lubumbashi as Mazembe's strikers found it impossible to beat goalkeeper El Moez Mahjoub.
Ahly out in front
Zamalek did not thrill their fans either but at least did get the win in defeating Dynamos of Zimbabwe 1-0 in Cairo on Sunday. A goal after just three minutes threatened an avalanche as Zamalek went on the offensive but in the end they finished with a major case of the jitters and were fortunate to keep the scoreline intact.
Dynamos paid the penalty for failing to properly clear a corner which fell for defender Amr Al Shafti to cleverly side-foot through a maze of defenders and into the back of the net. Gamal Hamza twice hit the woodwork as Zamalek threatened again but the closest the game came to another goal was when Dynamos' Thomas Sweswe rammed a free-kick against the crossbar.
Al Ahly lead the group after forcing a goalless draw at ASEC Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire on Saturday. The two clubs have been perennial challengers over the last decade of CAF Champions League competition but this was the fist time they failed to score in any of their meetings.
The next round of Champions League fixtures will be played on 15-17 August. Al Ahly return home to face Dynamos while Zamalek stay in Cairo for a third successive game to host ASEC Abidjan. In Group B, Al Hilal host Coton Sport and Enyimba hosts TP Mazembe Englebert, whose hopes could well be ended should they failed to pick up any points in Nigeria.
