Sepahan secured a shot at revenge by beating Waitakere United
3-1 in the opening game at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2007. The
Iranians will now face Urawa Red Diamonds, whom they recently lost
to in the final of the AFC Champions League, in Monday's
quarter-final.
Emad Mohammed gave Sepahan the perfect start, scoring twice
inside the opening five minutes to give them a commanding
advantage. Abdul Wahab Abu Al Hail added a third within two minutes
of the restart, and Luka Bonacic's side continued to press
forward for more goals.
However, a courageous Waitakere side refused to give in and 16 minutes from time they reduced the deficit. Darren Bazeley's free kick deflected off Sepahan keeper Hadi Aghily and crept into the net. The consolation goal ensured the New Zealanders will return home with something to celebrate, while their opponents will look forward to a chance at redemption.
Sepahan's swift reunion with Urawa takes place in Toyota on Monday, with the winner meeting AC Milan in the semi-finals.
