I am really pleased that we won our first ever World Cup match. It gives us real encouragement for the future. This victory means that we can be really ambitious as regards the rest of the tournament. Technically and tactically we played really well, but we lost our concentration every so often. I'm sure that back in Senegal though the whole country will be pleased for us and proud as well. Ibrahima Ndiaye, Senegal coach
There is always a lot of pressure for the first match. The first goal hit us hard and my players didn't know how to react. We could have done better but you have to understand that this isn't the same team that was here in previous years. My boys are a young group and they need to gain some experience. Nenem, Japan coach
This is our first victory at a World Cup and we are obviously
delighted but we need to keep our feet on the ground. We're
here to learn, match by match, both from the other teams and from
the tournament as a whole. This win will give us confidence for the
rest of the competition.
Pape Koukpaki, Senegal player
We have only been training together for a week and were lacking
in cohesion - and we paid the price for it at the end of the day.
We didn't play well but I think that as a team, we are capable
of bouncing back. We will have to in the next match.
Shingo Terukina, Japan player
