When Iranian keeper Hamed Ghorbanpour expertly flicked the ball up in his own half and unleashed a thunderous strike in the direction of the Spanish goal during the two teams’ Group B encounter, he can scarcely have imagined his shot would elude the despairing dive of his opposite number and nestle in the top corner. But not only was his aim true, FIFA.com users voted his stupendous effort the Goal of the Tournament for the recently concluded FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Rio de Janeiro. And while Iran ultimately failed in their bid to reach the quarter-finals, the wonder goal helped the mid-east men to a memorable 5-4 win over the Spaniards and a proud bow-out of the competition.
In what was a very tight race, Ghorbanpour’s strike took top spot ahead of Madjer’s goal for Portugal against Brazil in the last eight (second place, 0.1 of a star behind), and that of Uruguay’s Parrillo against Nigeria at the same stage of the competition (third place, 0.2 of a star behind).
