Brazil outlast brave Nigerians
The South Americans started the brighter of the two sides and amassed a 3-1 lead at the close of the first period. Andre opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Musa Najare drew level for the Africans. Andre bagged two more as the opening period wound down, both from precise shots that picked out the top corner of the net.
The goals kept coming in the second period, Bartholomew Ibenegu and James Okwuosa struck first to bring the Nigerians to 3-3 before Ibenegbu slammed home a beauty of a strike to put the Africans into the lead. The Brazilians, stung into response, drew level through Anderson. Ibenegbu scored again and so did Buru as the second period ended on a knife’s edge tangled at 5-5.
The Brazilians hit out in the third period with three quickfire goals from Andre, Jorginho and Benjamin to make the score 8-5. The CAF giants were in no way overawed by the deficit and forced extra time with well-taken goals from Okwuosa, Ibenegbu again and Victor Tale.
Brazil looked the sharper side in the extra period, settling the affair 10-8 thanks to goals from Andre and Bruno. The Nigerians were sprawled on the sand after the scintillating game, and they go home with their heads held high. Brazil will now meet Portugal in a marquee semi-final meeting.
