Rampant Portugal overcome Rodas

Portugal recovered from an early deficit to sweep aside El Salvador 8-2 and assume leadership of Group B on goal difference from Italy.

Jose Mateus' side took just 77 seconds to edge in front, but quick-fire goals from Jose Ruiz and Saul Blanco propelled the Cuscatlecos into an unexpected 2-1 lead. Then Luis Rodas took centre stage, denying the Europeans with a series of superb saves.

Finally, though, Portugal found their touch and four goals in little over four second-period minutes - two from star man Madjer - put them in command. Rodas continued to frustrate the Portuguese during the third period, but Torres made it 6-2 before Belchior scored twice, the first from a spectacular overhead-kick.
