Russia outmuscled United Arab Emirates en route to a 4-0 victory which sent them into the quarter-finals and their opponents crashing out. The result ensured Nikolai Pisarev's team finished as runners-up to Argentina in Group C, and booked them a last-eight meeting with the eventual winners of Group D.

Russia abandoned their usual conservative approach from the outset, and the decision paid dividends. By the end of the first period, they had hit the woodwork five times and scored twice, courtesy of Alexey Makarov and Egor Shaykov. The UAE had, in fact, gone close to opening the scoring but were denied by a diving, one-handed save from Andrey Bukhlitskiy.

United Emirates pressed forward in the second period but to no avail, and Russia extended their lead through Shaykov and Dmitry Shishin. Yury Gorchinskiy completed the scoring in the concluding third.
