France edged Uruguay 4-3 to reach the quarter-finals as Group A winners. The result eliminated Senegal, and booked Les Bleus and the Celeste dates with Italy and Portugal respectively.

France were roared on by their vociferous supporters, whom Didier Samoun relieved with a double that sent them in 2-0 up at the first break. Jeremy Basquaise added a third goal in the second period, but Ricar struck from distance to reduce the deficit on 26 minutes.

Eric Cantona's side restored their three-goal advantage through Basquaise thereafter, and although goals from Uruguayan pair Parrilo and Oli made for a tense finale, the hosts held on to secure their place in the last eight.
