Hosts Italy stayed perfect in the group phase to clinch first spot in Group A and a place in the quarter-finals after defeating Switzerland 3-2 at Stadio del Mare. The loss has condemned Switzerland to an early flight home as Senegal saw off Iran earlier in the day to seal second place in the group.

The Swiss gave the Italians an early scare, going ahead through Stephan Leu in the first period. But after a hard-fought start, with Switzerland in an all or nothing situation, Italy were able to level the score.

Giuseppe Soria went at it alone from the midfield, firing his shot into upper-left netting before Dejan Stankovic twice had a chance to put Switzerland ahead.

With back and forth chances for both sides in the third period, it was Italy who snatched the lead through Francesco Corosiniti after Stankovic had just threatened at the other end. However, the Pivot player finally found his just reward as he tapped home to once again draw things level.

Corosiniti had the final say, though, as he scored his second late on to top off a nervy ending and send the Swiss packing. The three points has ensured Italy’s place in the knockout phase where they will face the second-place finisher in Group B on 8 September.
