Russia defeated Tahiti with ease, hitting five unanswered goals past the islanders to move on to six points in Group C and ensure their place in the quarter-finals.
With heavy rain falling at Stadio del Mare, neither side were able to find a breakthrough in the first period, despite Russia’s show of superiority.
The second period opened with more success for the eastern Europeans, however, as Egor Shaykov capitalised on a defensive mistake from the Tahitians to fire home a powerful volley.
Tahiti were searching for an equaliser on the counter, but it was Russia whose domination finally told in the third period.
Egor Eremeev scored his third goal of the tournament, before Yury Krasheninnikov lobbed an awkward ball over Franck Revel in the Tahitian goal.
Ilya Leonov then stroked in a fine chance from the left flank, and it was Alexey Makarov who put a seal things as he tapped home with ease after a glaring mistake from Revel.
Tahiti still, however, have a chance to qualify for the knockout phase when they face Nigeria on Tuesday 6 September, while Russia will look to finish the group stage perfect against Venezuela.
