Portugal finished their Group B account with another emphatic win, this time an 8-3 result over struggling Oman. Despite the fact that they had already booked passage to the knockout phase and were guaranteed a first-place finish in the section, the fancied and wildly talented Lusitanians refused to take their foot off the accelerator against the Asian hopefuls on a partly cloudy day in Ravenna.
Portugal looked their usual smashing selves in the Italian sand on Monday, racking up a 3-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from the outstanding Madjer, Paulo Graca and Lucio, whose overhead effort was the pick of the bunch.
The Europeans extended the lead to 5-1 after the whistle went for the second period as Duarte and Yahya Al Araimi’s own-goal looked to put the game well beyond the Omanis.
The third period was mere formality as the Portuguese were in fine fettle and in no mood for half measures. Belchior, Madjer (2) and Lucio all added more goals as Oman battled manfully to bring the score to a relatively respectable 8-3.
The Asian side, who were unable to win a game or earn a point at these finals, now head for home while Portugal now wait to learn the identity of their opponents in the next round – Italy, Senegal or Switzerland.
