Bahrain have only competed once before at a FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, back in 2006. After winning their regional qualifying group three years ago, they made it as far as the quarter-finals at Rio de Janeiro 2006. They subsequently failed to qualify for the 2007 and 2008 editions.
After finishing fourth in Asian qualifying in 2007 and not entering in 2008, Bahrain reached Dubai 2009 by virtue of their second-place finish in this year’s regional qualifiers. They prevailed against Oman in the semi-finals before losing out to Japan in the decider.
After being drawn in a tough group alongside Brazil, Nigeria and Switzerland, Bahrain will need an impressive performance to emulate their 2006 result. Speaking in the build-up to the finals, the team’s Brazilian coach Gustavo Silva said, “It won’t be an easy tournament for us. We lost in the final of the Asian qualifiers to a superior team, but we need to put that defeat behind us and just focus on our first match in the World Cup against Switzerland.”
