Tournament debutants Switzerland had their work cut out for them tonight as they prepared to face a Uruguay side that had toppled Portugal and Spain en route to the semi-finals. They proved up to the task.
Uruguay were contesting their third semi-final at beach soccer’s main event, and their strengths were evident. But the Swiss struck first, Dejan Stankovic finding the back of the net with what, for him, was an uncharacteristically plain, albeit effective, shot. Stephan Meier and then Mo Jaeggy tested Diego, but to no avail. Stankovic then returned to his acrobatic ways, adding a second to a chorus of gasps.
Swiss goalkeeper Nico was looking solid as ever, as Uruguay tried to find a way back into the match. Matias and Oli came close, before Sandro Spaccarotella and Stankovic struck. Tempers were running high before Uruguay’s captain Martin struck to give his side a lift. When Nico pushed a penalty off of the bar, though, Uruguay must have sensed this was not their night. Stankovic, Stephan Leu and then Michael Rodrigues added more to leave little doubt.
Switzerland have reached the finals of Dubai 2009 and shall face Brazil on Sunday at 21:00 (local time). Uruguay now turn their attention to the match for third place on Sunday at 19:30, where they shall face Portugal.
