Portugal entered this semi-final as the only team to have beaten Brazil in the history of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, having topped them on penalties in 2005. But they had no luck in repeating the feat tonight, as the seemingly unstoppable Seleção marched on. Brazil had scored the most goals at Dubai 2009 through the quarter-finals and wasted little time in continuing where they left off.
Benjamin went close early on, book-ended by overhead-kick attempts from both Madjer and Belchior. Sidney put Brazil ahead, tapping home after Bueno’s attack had caused confusion. Benjamin’s volley extended the lead and Bruno hit two more, eliciting painful memories for the Portuguese, who lost to Brazil in the semi-finals of both Rio de Janeiro 2006 and Marseille 2008.
Portugal began to look a bit more relaxed as Bilro got one back, but his sending off did not help matters. Daniel missed one penalty before converting another, while Portugal drove multiple shots agonisingly close. Buru made scoring look easy as the match was essentially sealed.
Brazil have reached the finals of Dubai 2009 and, on Sunday at 21:00 (local time), face the winner of tonight’s semi-final match between Uruguay and Switzerland. Portugal turn their attention to the match for third place on Sunday at 19:30.
