Argentina cruise through Latin duel

Argentina got their first points on the board with a comprehensive 6-0 victory over Costa Rica on the second day of action in Dubai.

Both teams came into this game having lost their opening match, so it was no surprise that there was a tight, nervous opening. Indeed, just as in Argentina’s last game with Italy yesterday, the first period yielded no goals. Yet it was the Albiceleste who came the closest to scoring with Javier Vivas spurning the best opportunity, with just the keeper to beat.

After just 90 seconds of the restart, the South Americans took the lead through Federico Hilaire. The No8 evaded the presence of three Costa Rican players before turning and finishing cools past the keeper. Ezequiel Hilaire doubled the advantage shortly afterwards, when he rolled his free-kick through the sand, with the ball bouncing wickedly, completely deceiving the goalkeeper.

Argentina made it three through Agustin Dallera’s beautiful lob, but Los Ticos had chances too and forced Marcelo Salgueiro into a couple of decent saves. However, four minutes into the final period, Federico Hilaire intercepted the ball and netted his second of the game, Another Costa Rica mistake was punished by Facundo Minici.

With the game reaching a conclusion, Dallera made it six with an absolute piledriver, but try as they might, Costa Rica failed to net a consolation. It was a tough lesson for the side from central Americans, but they will be better for the experience.
