Japan cruised to a 7-2 victory over El Salvador that sent them through to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Dubai 2009 as Group B winners. The result left the Central Americans, who entered the game with no chance of reaching the knockout phase, pointless after three matches.
The contest was effectively settled inside the first eight minutes, after goals from Take, Toma, Maezono and Makino gave Japan a four-goal lead. Maezono’s second of the game and an Oda penalty made it 6-0, before Hernandez reduced the deficit on 21 minutes.
Tabata restored the Asians’ six-goal cushion early in the third period. El Salvador, to their credit, battle on bravely and gained a small reward when Walter scored a last-gasp consolation.
Japan will return to action on Friday, when they take on the Group A runners-up Portugal for a place in the semi-finals.
