The votes have been made, counted and verified. The FIFA.com Team of 2008 is as follows:
Iker Casillas won your vote for the safest hands of 2008 by a landslide. A total of 43 per cent of voters backed Spain's captain. Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon was the second favourite with 15 per cent, and Manchester United faithful Edwin van der Sar came third with nine per cent of the vote.
The back four
So, who were the four men you believed could shut out any striker and dominate the back line? Well, there's no other left back than Phillip Lahm for the fans. The German defender has shown to be solid at the back while deadly going forward. Who can forget his magnificent last-minute goal against Turkey in the semi-finals of at EURO 2008. Manchester United and French International Patrice Evra lost out on a spot in the dream team by two per cent.
Chelsea's captain John Terry and Barcelona's Carles Puyol were the pair you most wanted to have at the heart of the defence. Terry was backed by 28 per cent and Puyol by 25 per cent. Rio Ferdinand came a close third with 22 per cent and Fabio Cannavaro was left far behind with 15 per cent of the vote. The decision for the team's right back was a classic Barca-Real Madrid showdown. Real's Sergio Ramos ultimately won the day with Brazilian Daniel Alves losing out by just 366 votes.
The superb skills of four very talented midfielders set them apart from the rest. On the left, Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery was the fan favourite. Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Barcelona's Xavi were the two favoured central midfielders. Finishing off the midfield on the right hand-side, the man of the hour, is Kaka, widely rumoured to become the world's first £100m player in the next few weeks.
Who were the two men you wanted to see dancing past defenders and scoring goals? Reigning FIFA World Player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo was voted for by 52 per cent of the fans and fellow nominee Lionel Messi took the second spot with 51 per cent. Could we ever see these two playing side by side in the real world? What a treat it would be for the fans!
