We are only a few days away from the launch of a new season of FIFA Match Predictor (previously known as FIFA World Leagues Predictor). Registration for our fifth Predictor season opens on 22 August.

As the excitement builds for the launch of Season 5, we will be castling a reflective eye on the first four seasons of our massively popular prediction-based game. We begin our Predictor Flashback series with a look at the opening season.

A competitive start
In it’s inaugural season, FIFA World Leagues predictor attracted almost 30,000 players. Enticed by the incredible Grand Prize - a trip for two to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ - predictors attempted to maneuver their way to the top of the table over the course of 31 rounds. And maneuver they did! Of the four completed seasons to date, Season 1 holds the record for the highest average overall player score (1,046 points).

Two Canadian friends claimed Season 1. The Canucks, who are friends and co-workers, joined forces to make their predictions. "Our approach to the game was always simple," said MPear11. "We didn't really care how we finished each round, as long as we stayed close to the leaders and were consistent." Their tactics paid off and the duo won a trip to Africa’s first ever FIFA World Cup!

I appreciated the game because I learnt more about the global sport. I think it made me a better fan.

Winner’s words
“I like the fact that the selected matches are from around the world.” said champion MPear11 while sitting at an outdoor café in Nelson Mandela Square, Johannesburg during the unforgettable tournament.

“I like the whole idea: that you have to know football to win this game… and that you have to know the teams… and that you have to know the history of the teams.

“I appreciated the game because I learnt more about the global sport. I think it made me a better fan,” he said.

The prediction game gained a loyal fan in MPear11. Not only is he our first ever predictor champion but he also holds the honour of being one of only two thousand predictors to have played every single season of our prediction game to date!
