Match of the week

Sao Paulo-Fluminense (Brazil)
With only three games left in the Brasileiro, Fluminense are still in the race for the title despite slipping to second after last Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Goias. They are just one point behind league leaders Corinthians and will be looking to inflict maximum damage on Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most decorated club.

Moscow derby
CSKA Moscow-Spartak Moscow
With Zenit St. Petersburg having already claimed the Russian Premier League title after last weekend’s 5-0 thrashing of Rostov, Moscow rivals CSKA and Spartak meet in the penultimate round of Premier League matches. CSKA are sitting comfortably in second place, which ensures UEFA Champion’s League football next season, while Spartak Moscow are ten points behind and will have to be content with the UEFA Europa League. The outcome of this derby will therefore come down to pride more than ambition.

Egyptian contenders
Zamalek-Al Masry (Egypt)
It’s first against third in Egypt on Sunday. Visitors Al Masry could close the gap on leaders Zamalek to two points if they win. A loss would leave them eight points adrift of the summit with only 11 games played.

Continental hopefuls
Cerezo Osaka-Yokohama F Marinos (Japan)
With only one point separating them on the J-League table and just four games left in the season, fourth-placed Cerezo Osaka and seventh-placed Yokohama F Marinos face off on Saturday in a match that will be crucial to their respective chances of qualifying for the AFC Champions League. Newly-promoted Cerezo Osaka will be looking to cap off their impressive return to Japan’s top tier by reaching the continental showpiece, but can they do so at the expense of their experienced visitors?

Old champions face new leaders

Penarol-Defensor (Uruguay)
Uruguayan league leaders Defensor travel to third-placed Penarol on Saturday. The reigning champions trail the league leaders by just two points and could leapfrog them this weekend. The pair met once in the 2009/10 Clausura, with then hosts Defensor losing 2-3.

Spanish showdown
Villarreal-Valencia (Spain)
Villarreal will be looking to rebound from their entertaining 3-1 defeat at Barcelona last weekend when they face fourth-placed Valencia, who trail their hosts by only three points. The visitors will need to reverse their poor recent away form, which has seen them register two successive defeats, if they plan to keep pace at the top of the table.
