Previously one of Serie A's lesser lights, Bologna's Panagiotis Kone went from obscurity to renown in the blink of an eye earlier this year, leaving no one who saw his remarkable goal against Napoli likely to forget it. The Stadio San Paolo has witnessed some moments of magic down the years, many of them conjured by Diego Maradona, but this particular work of genius was met by silence.

The hosts were leading 2-1 after 86 minutes in the 17th round of games in Italy's top flight when Greece midfielder Kone flung himself in the air on the edge of the area. Team-mate Gyorgy Garics had sent over a right-wing cross and Kone connected with the perfect acrobatic volley, thundering the ball high into Morgan De Sanctis' net and inspiring the visitors to then eke out a winning goal three minutes later.

Unable to respond, Napoli's championship hopes took a blow and Juventus went on to defend their title, while the three points helped I Rossoblu steer themselves clear of relegation.

The three most popular goals will be announced on 9 December, after which voting will begin again to decide which player will lift the prestigious trophy at the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala on 13 January.
