The Zurich Opera House has emptied, the red carpet has been rolled up and world football has learned the news that Cristiano Ronaldo and Marta have been crowned FIFA World Player and FIFA Women's World Player 2008 respectively.
The coaches and captains of FIFA's 208 member associations have selected their favourites and based on their results, the Manchester United forward and the Brazilian silver medalist received the awards for their stellar displays for club and country during the past 12 months.
It must have been a difficult decision for the voters to make with such an array of talent to choose from and the eight nominees who missed out players can hold their heads up high after their sublime performances in 2008. It really was a year to remember and those stars helped to light up world football once again.
