Footballers the world over love to score goals, while fans love
to watch them and pick out their favourites. Throughout 2007,
FIFA.com has been helping the fans do just that.
Every time a player found the back of the net during the five FIFA
World Cups organised this year, visitors to
FIFA.com were able to choose the Goal of the
Tournament.
And now it is time to decide which of these is the creme de
la creme and vote for the Goal of the Year. Choosing your favourite
promises to be no easy task though.
Argentinean skill versus Nigerian fire
Let us start with Argentinean prodigy Sergio Aguero, who was
one of the standout talents at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007.
El Kun, as he is known, was one of the main factors in his
team's victory at the tournament, winning both the adidas
Golden Ball and the adidas Golden Shoe. He scored no fewer than six
goals in Canada, including a flick and left-foot volley combination
against Poland in the Round of 16 which
FIFA.com users voted as the competition's best
goal.
If skill won the day in Canada, strength was the deciding factor at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007. Yakubu Alfa, who was part of the Nigerian squad which captured the trophy for the third time in their history, let fly with an absolute piledriver against Colombia, notching a goal that was as crucial as it was spectacular. His left-footed curler which flew into the top corner of the net gave the Golden Eaglets a 2-1 win in the quarter-finals and moved them a step closer to hoisting the trophy once again.
For those of you looking for a more subtle and deft touch, how
about Marta's little gem at the FIFA Women's World Cup
China 2007? The USA defenders certainly did not forget about it in
a hurry after the Brazilian starlet managed to combine a flick, a
shimmy and an inch-perfect strike all in one move.
What is more, the two-time FIFA World Player of the Year
managed this in the semi-final, setting up a show-down between the
Seleçao and eventual winners Germany. Brazil may have had
to settle for silver at the end of the day, but Marta went home
with the adidas Golden Ball, adidas Golden Shoe and Goal of the
Tournament awards to add to her already impressive trophy
cabinet.
Goalie Ghorbanpour gets in on the act
On the beaches of Copacabana, you chose a player who is
more accustomed to preventing goals that scoring them. Iran keeper
Hamed Ghorbanpour struck a beauty which you voted as Goal of the
Tournament at the 2007 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. The
Team Melli goalkeeper let fly with a thunderbolt from his
own goal line which flew into the top corner of the net at the
other end of the pitch, past Spanish keeper Dona.
The Iranian number one incredibly managed to finish as his
country's equal top scorer with three goals. Will it be good
enough to win Goal of the Year? You be the judge.
The most recent entry came on 16 December from Brazilian star
Kaka. The AC Milan midfield maestro set the final of the FIFA Club
World Cup Japan 2007 alight, dancing down the left wing as only he
knows how before curling a left-foot shot past Mauricio Caranta in
the Boca Juniors net, securing the title for his team as well as
the adidas Golden Ball and the Goal of the Tournament on a personal
level.
