A week of milestones and marvels

In many ways, football is a simple game: the team that scores the most goals, wins. Yet in every week, in every league and in every single match, there are intriguing statistical sub-plots that help make the beautiful game the fascinating spectacle that it is.

That's why, every week, we at FIFA.com take a look at the numbers behind the results, highlighting football's biggest winners and losers from the week just past. In this, the latest of our regular round-ups, we eulogise about the likes of Jefferson Farfan, Frank Lampard and Lisandro Lopez, and sympathise with Rwandan club Military.

Eredivisie goals had been scored by PSV Eindhoven prior to Sunday's match at Roda JC, and Jefferson Farfan duly added the 4,000th when he broke the deadlock midway through the second half. The milestone was reached 41-and-a-half years after Coen Dillen opened the Dutch giants' Eredivisie account, but while Farfan was able to take his place in the PSV hall of fame alongside former stalwarts such as Phillip Cocu and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink - scorer of the club's 3,000th and 3,500th goals respectively - his effort did not bring the Eindhoven giants any closer to a fourth successive title. Instead, Marcel Meeuwis' 92nd-minute equaliser gave Ajax the chance to narrow the gap at the top to just four points, an opportunity the Amsterdam outfit grasped decisively with a 4-1 win over Willem II.

days after his 16th birthday, Universidad Catolica Quito's Pablo Ochoa became the week's youngsest goalscorer when he opened the scoring in a 2-2 draw with Deportivo Azogues on Saturday. The youngster's strike helped secure the struggling Ecuadorians' first point of the Primera A season, although they remain rooted to the foot of the table, four points adrift of second-bottom Macara. At the other end of the standings, meanwhile, two of Universidad's city rivals, LDU and Deportivo Quito, are battling it out on 16 and 14 points respectively, with Barcelona a further point back in third.

matches undefeated: that is the record now shared by Standard Liege and Wapda of Pakistan after the Jupiler League leaders extended their remarkable unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win away to Germinal Beerschot on Friday. With WAPDA's season having ended in January, Standard - four points clear at the league's summit - can move out on their own, and take a step closer to a first title in 25 years, by avoiding defeat when struggling Mons come calling this Sunday. Should they fail, all eyes would fall on Anorthosis Famagusta, 5-0 winners over Nea Salamina at the weekend, whose 25-match unbeaten run has seen them race 11 points clear at the top of the Cypriot top flight.

goals in 21 top flight games has established Lisandro 'Licha' Lopez firmly at the summit of the Portuguese scoring charts. The 25-year-old Argentinian has certainly been one of the main reasons behind Porto building up a seemingly unassailable 16-point cushion over second-placed Benfica, and he was once again vital to the champions-elect's cause on Saturday; his 77th-minute equaliser paving the way for Tarik Sektioui to seal a 2-1 comeback win away to Leixoes. The results leaves Porto well placed to clinch the title by a record-breaking margin, eclipsing the 15-point gap they managed in season 1987/88, while their star striker has been rewarded for his fine form with a place in Alfio Basile's Argentina squad for the match against Egypt a week today.

, that notorious number so widely associated with misfortune, this week proved the curse of Rwanda's bottom club, Military, who went down by 13 unanswered goals at home to title-chasing APR. The victims of the week's biggest win, who just days earlier had celebrated their second victory of the season, now face a battle to climb off the foot of the table, where they remain locked on eights points with fellow strugglers Marines and Kibuye. As for APR, they trail leaders ATRACO by just a single point and, in the wake of Saturday's thumping win, have a considerably superior goal difference in their favour.

goals in Chelsea's 6-1 demolition of Derby County made Frank Lampard the week's highest-scoring individual. With his second, third and fourth goals coming in a 15-minute spell in the second half, the Chelsea midfielder also laid claim to the week's fastest hat-trick and took his overall tally for the London club to 107. Chelsea currently lie three points behind Manchester United in the race for the Premier League title and are in negotiations to tie their sought-after star midfielder to a new, long-term contract. Other hat-trick heroes over the past week included Xanthi's Tomasz Radzinski, Penarol's Carlos Bueno and Luis Suarez, the hero of Ajax's aforementioned 4-1 win over Willem II.
