Austria took part in their second World Cup at the 1954 finals in Switzerland, where they recorded their biggest success by finishing the tournament in third place.

Nevertheless, it was their quarter-final match against the hosts that provided the biggest spectacle of the tournament. The Swiss took a 3-0 lead after just 19 minutes before Austria began an incredible comeback that culminated in a 7-5 win - a result that remains the highest-scoring World Cup match of all time.
