David Beckham making the final appearance of his glittering career was a monumental event. The fashion icon therefore needed footwear fitting for the occasion – and boy did he get it!

Adidas made a personalised Predator Lethal Zone II boot for Beckham to wear for Paris Saint-Germain against Brest on Saturday.

The boots had the Union Jack colours, and imprinted on them were the date, the jersey numbers the free-kick specialist had worn most prominently (7, 23 and 32), and the names of Beckham’s children with wife Victoria: sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, and daughter Harper.

PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti generously gave Beckham the captain’s armband for the match. The man whose free-kick mastery inspired the film Bend it like Beckham, for which actress Parminder Nagra won the FIFA Presidential Award in 2002, responded by setting up Blaise Matuidi’s goal in a 3-1 win for the Ligue 1 champions.

Beckham, in floods of tears, was substituted in the 83rd minute to an exceptionally rapturous and fully deserved standing ovation.
