The ninth edition of the FIFA Club World Cup gets underway in Japan today, with seven teams battling for the coveted honour of becoming the best club side in the world.

Almost exactly twelve years ago, eight teams took part in the inaugural tournament. And even though European heavyweights Manchester United and Real Madrid were among the participants, Corinthians and Vasco da Gama contested an all-Brazilian final.
