Shankly’s Subbuteo skills

Football was Bill Shankly’s life. The legendary Liverpool manager’s obsessive passion could never be confined to office hours, and it was once reported that he had celebrated a wedding anniversary by taking his long-suffering wife on a scouting mission to lower-league Rochdale.

Shankly refuted that allegation as only Shankly could. "Of course I didn't take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present - it was her birthday! Would I have got married in the football season? Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves."

The saint-like patience of Nessie Shankly continued to be required when her husband retired in 1974, with his fixation on football continuing long after the curtain had been brought down on his 42-year career as player and manager. This picture from 1976 is a prime example of that, with Shankly captured at home indulging in a game of Subbuteo, the famous table-top football game, two years after walking away from Anfield.
