Football was certainly a much rougher sport during its infancy – as the above picture of players rolling about injured in the late 1880s illustrates!

Referees, indeed, were not introduced until 1891, with disputes previously settled by the two team captains, and later by two umpires - one per team - to whom appeals could be made.

And it was not for the faint of heart!
