The sight of a black-and-white-clad youngster enjoying a kickabout in London in 1959 may not sound unusual. It is, however, when the sight isn’t of a fan of a Newcastle United team that had won three FA Cups at Wembley that decade, but of a panda five and a half miles down the road at London Zoo!

Chi Chi was born in China PR in 1957, and arrived in the English capital the following year. There, she became the inspiration behind Sir Peter Scott’s iconic World Wildlife Fund (WWF) logo, while her playful personality made her one of the most famous animals in British history.

And in terms of play, there was nothing Chi Chi enjoyed more than a good old kickabout – as the above photo of her having fun with her keeper illustrates!
