Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Guangzhou Evergrande FC goalkeeper Li Shuai, doing his best Superman impression to deny Paolo Goltz of Club America.
The 33-year-old was in inspired form as the Asian champions edged their Mexican opponents 2-1 in a dramatic FIFA Club World Cup encounter in Osaka, paving the way for a semi-final against Barcelona.
“He made the difference,” was America coach Ignacio Ambriz’s rueful tribute to Li, while Guangzhou’s Luiz Felipe Scolari lauded his No1 for possessing “all the qualities you need in a top-class keeper”.
He will, of course, need every one of those attributes when he goes up against Barça and a star-studded frontline led by Lionel Messi. But while Messi managed to score a superb free-kick at the weekend, he too will need to be at his brilliant best – as this image underlines – to find a way past Guangzhou’s heroic goalie.
