It is 36.8 cm tall, weighs in at 6.175 kilograms, and is fashioned from 18-karat gold. Yes, we're talking about the most sought-after prize in world football: the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy. Every four years, the best footballing nations go head-to-head in the quest to lift the famous cup and earn the title of world champions.
At each tournament, the two teams who make it as far as the Final are the ones for whom the dream of winning the FIFA World Cup becomes tantalisingly closest to reality. Even before kick-off, the players are tangibly reminded of the prize at stake, because the trophy is normally the first thing the teams see and then file solemnly past when they emerge from the tunnel prior to the national anthems.
One of the most memorable FIFA World Cup Finals in history was the 1954 showdown between Germany and Hungary, known to Germans of all ages as "The Miracle of Berne." The seemingly invincible Hungarians, who had already thumped Sepp Herberger's men 8-3 at the group stage, were 2-0 up after just eight minutes. However, Germany turned the match on its head and went on to record a momentous 3-2 triumph.
Fast forward to 1970, and a 100,000 crowd packed into the Azteca stadium in Mexico City to see a stunning Brazil side see off Italy by a 4-1 margin. Superstar Pele came out of international retirement for the tournament and played a full part in a series of performances many people think approached footballing perfection.
Another unforgettable Final took place in 1978 when Argentina met the Netherlands, the hosts winning 3-1 in extra time. Just eight years later, the Albiceleste and their inspirational figurehead Diego Maradona sealed a second world crown with a 3-2 victory over Germany, again in Mexico.
Naturally enough, the 2006 Final in Berlin is the freshest in the memory, with Italy finally overcoming France on penalties after a tense and incident-packed 120 minutes, with a twist some regard as tragic: three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane was sent off for a famous head-butt in extra time, ending his illustrious international career in ignominious fashion.
