China's passion for and devotion to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is best on display in Shenyang. In order to meet the criteria to host, the local footballing fraternity took the decision to tear down the city's Wulihe stadium, a major landmark where China beat Oman in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on 7 October 2001 to book their first-ever trip to the global showpiece.
The new ground - Shenyang Olympic Sports Centre Stadium - was built in 2007 as a venue for the 2008 Games' Olympic Football Tournament. Boasting a capacity of 60,000, the stadium is not only one of the most symbolic buildings in the city, but also ranks among the nation's most modern sports venues.
Located at the city's Hunnan district, the stadium is only 20 km from the airport and 3 km from the team hotel.
